My Hidden Expressions

I as an art person has touched up on most aspects of art - music, choreography, visual arts and dramatic arts. In my early childhood years, I was taking dance and choir classes. I practiced ballet, Chinese traditional dance, and ballroom dancing. I took these dance lessons in school and privately at home with my godfather. I did this until late elementary when I sprained a joint somewhere and fear of going back into it. Choir and piano lessons was my aunt Michelle's idea. I recognized her effort in making me a performer at an early stage of life. I enjoyed it for a while, until she moved to Hong Kong for her business and I stopped going to those classes. She always told me to continue them but my mother objected the idea. With her being my milestone, I had no motivation to continue. Then, I focused my leisure time in building miniature architectural things like small houses and furniture and started following my brother's footsteps into visual arts. I didn't realize I can actually draw properly at the age of 7-8 but everyone in my surrounding were amazing artists, I just had to keep up with the competition.

By grade 6, I transferred school where my life slowed down for a bit. There were no young artists or talents. Hence, no competition as a motivation to improve. When middle school started, I went into my interest in music again, back then I played the flute. The notes were similar to those of the piano so I picked it up in no time. However, my favourite instrument was still the piano, so I saved up my allowance money and got myself a piano keyboard but I had no idea how to play anything by that time anymore. Visual art was still there for me in Middle School, my fellow schoolmates finally started to catch up to my competition but still, I did not have to try so I put that off for a while and focused on music. By grade 8, I was able to master the concept of the flute but later lost interest of it.

Finally, when I reached high school, we were only allowed to select one art major - art, music or drama. I chose art. Competition finally met my standards so I once again focused my interest in art and brought it to another level. By grade 10, I started exploring art beyond the assignments and started my very first oil on canvas painting. I started to be more interested in landscape paintings rather than abstract. I lose interest quite often and quick so by grade 12, I gave up on art. I started to focus on popular music, which was mostly Chinese. I found my interest in a band of two girls, "Twins", which made me eager to learn the meaning to every piece of lyric out there. The only problem was the Chinese. I can hardly speak it, don't mention reading and writing. As I got more obsessed over these girls, instead of relying on other sources for news and gossip, I picked up the news and tried to read it myself. Dictionary in one hand and the article in the other. That was my first step into my Chinese vocabulary career.

When OAC reached, I started to have interest in dramatic arts for some reason. I always had an interest in movies but I never thought about being part of the work behind the scenes. Finally, I heard the announcement one morning, the drama club was looking for stage managers, I tried out for the audition and got the position as Head Stage Manager. With drama and music working my interests together, I started to pick up the interest of scriptwriting. 2003 was when my online fan fiction career started. I named myself Strawberry Shortcake. Since then, I've completed about 10 stories. Writing these stories, allowed me to express my thoughts, feelings, emotions and imaginations more openly, through words. I got to say it helped my writing a lot. The stories did improve through time as I made it a career instead of a hobby. The first one is horribly embarrassing to be mentioned. If you're not an EG, please don't read my stories as editing was never done properly. Through, writing these stories online, I pushed myself into html and Photoshop work, I couldn't trust the other artists, creating what I've imagined for myself. From, cheap html pages to java scripts, I've gained a lot. I can't say I'm a pro in Photoshop but good enough to present a site like this to you all.

Finally first year of University, some thing came up and I chose not to go into the full time program so I explored my lost self in a part-time course called Directing Screen Performance. It's a course that offers tons of experience on stage and off stage. I never regretted wasting a year doing nothing because through the year off, I've gained an expressive part of me. I had too much emotions bottled up inside and through, drama I got my relief. It helped me explore my emotions and express them the way it should be shown. The acting process helps in self development and allows you explore all aspects of life. The true concept of acting is not to demonstrate or replicate the role; but is to express the emotion buried deep inside and perform the improvised signals coming from the brain with how you feel with no barriers/limits. Overall, this period of time helped me see from different perspectives and make my life experiences alive. Sure, they were history but it doesn't hurt to express what I accomplished over the years. Be proud.

Today, I gave up on many of these interests. I still have interest in popular music but have no time to keep up with the updates. I gave up on fan fiction writing but the endless ideas are still flowing in my head. I still work with Photoshop once in a while but time is always the issue. I'm trying to pick up the pencil to draw again and by the end of the summer, I'm hoping to finish some oil on canvas paintings. Well, here are some of my creations.
